From November 15th to 25th, São Paulo hosts the 26th Mix Brasil Diversity Culture Festival, largest cultural event dedicated to diversity in Latin America and one of the largest in the world. This year, the Festival screens more than 110 national and international films from different countries, 44% directed by women. In addition to bringing attractions that involve theater, music, literature, audiovisual laboratory, conference and the BIG MIX Jam 4Diversity – 1st Diversity Game Jam.
With free entry to its entire program, the Festival will open to the public on November 15th with a concert by the singer johnny hooker in the external audience of the Ibirapuera Auditorium. “Bixa Travesty”, starring Linn da Quebrada and directed by Kiko Goifman and Claudia Priscilla, winner of the Teddy Award for Best Documentary at the Berlin Festival and Best Feature Film by the Popular Jury and Soundtrack at the Brasília Festival, completes the opening program, in a session for guests at the Ibirapuera Auditorium.
The 26th Mix Brasil will show feature films by renowned directors and actors who were part of the Official Selection of the Berlin, Toronto, Sundance, Cannes and Locarno Festivals. Unprecedented in São Paulo, the highlights are “He Won’t Go Far On Foot”, the new film Gus Van Sant, with Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara and Jack Black, “Colette” de Wash westmoreland, starring Keira Knightley, “A Boy Like Jake” by Silas Howard on the headscarf Claire Danes, Jim Parsons and Octavia Spencer, “Conquer, Love and Live Intensely”, by Christophe Honoré, “Skate Kitchen”, by Crystal Moselle.
The list also includes several award-winning and highly anticipated films that will premiere in Brazil. Are they “My Days of Compassion” by Tali Shalom Ezer, with Kate Mara and Ellen Page, “The Happy Prince” de Rupert everett, with Colin Firth and Emily Watson, We, the Animals”, by Jeremiah Zagar, NEXT award at Sundance, Crazy Nights with Emily by Madeleine Olnek, with Molly Shannon and Susan Ziegler, Official Selection at SXSW, Outfest and Frameline, "Mapplethorpe"by Ondi Timoner with Matt Smith, and Marianne Rendón, (Official Selection at Tribeca), "Eva+Candel” by Ruth Caudeli with actress Silvia Varon, both will be at the session.
The Festival revisits the works of important directors of world cinema with the Retrospective “Lesbian Pioneering in Management”, showing films by Monika Treut, Barbara Hammer, Pratibha Parmar and Adélia Sampaio. The list includes films such as “Evidentiary Bodies”, “Nitrate Kisses”, “Amor Maldito”, “Female Misbehavior” e “A Place of Rage”.
"She is Ganda”, by PJ Raval, which won the audience award for Best Documentary at Inside Out Toronto and the jury award at Outfest, “Marilyn”, by Martín Rodríguez Redondo, best film at Queer Lisboa, “The Daughters of Fire”, by Albertina Carri, winner of best film at BAFICI, “Dark Baroque”, by Evangelia Kranioti, Special Jury Teddy Award at the Berlinale, “Tucked”, by Jamie Patterson, Audience Award for Best Fiction at Outfest, are part of the program.

The Mix Brasil Festival presents the largest selection of national feature films in its history. In total there are 20 Brazilian works, included in the Competitive Exhibition and Panorama Brasil. Those selected to compete for the Golden Rabbit are: “45 Days Without You”, by Rafael Gomes, “Bixa Travesty”, by Claudia Priscilla and Kiko Goifman, "Island", by Ary Rosa and Glenda Nicácio, “Inferninho” by Guto Parente and Pedro Diógenes, “I remember more of the Crows”, by Gustavo Vinagre, “David's Secret”, by Diego Freitas, “The Whisper of the Jaguar”, by Simon(é) Jaikiriuma Paetau and Thais Guisasola, “Socrates”, by Alex Moratto, “Sun Joy”, by Tavinho Teixeira, and “Raw Paint”, by Filipe Matzembacher and Marcio Reolon.
In the Panorama Brasil exhibition there are “Opening the Closet”, by Dario Menezes and Luis Abramo, “Alfredo Doesn’t Like Goodbyes”, by André Medeiros Martins, “Construindo Pontes”, by Heloisa Passos, “Copa 181”, by Dannon Lacerda, “Fabiana”, by Brunna Laboissière, “O Que Resta”, by Fernanda Teixeira, “Paraíso Perdido”, by Monique Gardenberg, “Rogéria – Senhor Astolfo Barroso Pinto”, by Pedro Gui, “SuperPina: Gostoso é Quando a Gente Faz!”, by Jean Santos, “Little Bear” by Stéphane Olijnyk.
As is tradition, short films are also highlighted at the Festival. This year, 39 Brazilian works will be shown, with 16 short films in competition. The short programs will feature the themes “Afetos Familiares”, “Boy Fugaz”, “Eternamente Soul”, “Fetiche: Free Your Mind”, “Meninas Mistério”, “Resistir para Existir”, “Sampa”, “Território/Territories”, in addition to the traditional session “Crescendo com Diversity”, aimed at children.
The 3rd edition of MixLab Spcine includes tables that will discuss topics such as an overview of Latin American cinematography, the photographic perspective, Spcine Play platforms, reflections on new performativities, a class on casting direction and film production in São Paulo, and features guests such as Colombians, director Ruth Caudeli and actress Silvia Váron, Chilean director and curator Sebastián Silva, director, actress and producer Helena Ignez, actresses Gilda Nomacce and Ana Flávia Cavalcanti, director and screenwriter Marcelo Caetano, among others.
Other Tribes
Several attractions involving theater, music, literature, LGBT dance and games are on the program. “Dramática em Cena” brings renowned shows such as “As 3 Uiaras de SP City”, text by Ave Terrena Alves and direction by Diego Moschkovich; “Demons”, directed by Marcelo D'avilla and Marcelo Denny and “The Wrath of Narciso”, text by Sergio Blanco and translated by Celso Cury, directed by Yara de Novais.
At Mix Music, the “Rainbow Cities” project brings shows with Diego Moraes, Liniker and Mel, new Drag Queen talents, new bands and choreographies. The traditional Gongo Show is confirmed for 25/11 at 16:30 pm at Centro Cultural São Paulo. The videos, submitted to the public and the guest jury led by Marisa Orth, can be registered at the accreditation desk during the festival.
The Literary Mix features 16 tables with the participation of 63 key names in the national publishing market, authors and editors who are discussing the place of the LGBTI community in literary production. Among the highlights the meeting between João Silvério Trevisan and Italo Moriconi remembering the life and work of Roberto Piva (Museu da Diversidade, 23/11 15pm), the three TRANSaraus that will bring together poets and slam artists LGB and mainly T and 'Fascism in Pasolini's Poetics' (Debate room 24/11 14pm) when representations of fascism made by the Italian filmmaker and writer and its repercussions in times of extremism will be presented.
The public will also be able to participate in the Mix Brasil Conference, which will discuss issues relating to politics, the market, identity, health and feminism in 25 tables, meetings, debates, courses, workshops and conversation circles. Curated by André Fischer, Gustavo Bonfiglioli and Ariel Nobre da Pajubá and other groups and collectives, the conference will cover topics such as Pleasure Management, post-election LGBTI, Fatphobia, Trans Spirituality and LGBTI Entrepreneurs in Tanque dos Tubarões.
In 2018, the festival brings great news for game fans: the BIG MIX Jam 4Diversity, the first Game Jam about the diversity of São Paulo. It was born from the union of BIG Festival, Abragames, Festival Mix Brasil, Diversidade and Game4Diversity from the Netherlands. The event takes place at the British School of Contemporary Arts (EBAC), bringing together game developers and audiovisual professionals to create games with the theme of this edition of the Festival:#PensoLogoResisto. And what's more, there is also a small exhibition of Games about Diversity, BIG Diversity, at the Centro Cultural São Paulo, CCSP, from the 15th to the 25th of November, with 5 games from Brazil and abroad.
Directed by André Fischer, artistic direction by João Federici and executive direction by Josi Geller, the 26th Mix Brasil Culture of Diversity Festival takes place at CineSesc, Spcine Olido, Cinemateca Brasileira, Instituto Moreira Salles, Centro Cultural São Paulo and Auditorium Ibirapuera.
