57% of gay men tend to grow old single, says survey

New research shows that most gay men tend to grow old alone, that is, single, when compared to lesbians.

According to the study carried out by AARP with 1.782 LGBT adults, the result showed that 57% of gays over 45 reach that age without the company of a partner, while among lesbians this percentage is much lower: 39%; In relation to bisexuals, the rate is 48%.

“The chance of growing old without being married among gay men is notably higher and this directly influences the needs and types of services targeted at this public”, points out the research report.

Previous studies, carried out by different entities, already showed a result similar to that of the AARP.

In 2013, a survey found that 63% of gay men over the age of 60 live their lives single.

In 2011, another report from the Stonewall Organization in the United Kingdom showed that gay and bisexual men over the age of 55 are three times more likely to reach old age single (40%) than heterosexual men (15%).
