The arrest that could solve the mysterious wave of murders in Toronto's gay neighborhood

The arrest of a man in February could be the answer to uncovering a wave of crimes plaguing a gay neighborhood in Toronto, Canada. In January, police arrested and charged Bruce McArthur with the first-degree murder of Andrew Kinsman, 49, Majeed Kayhan, 58, Soroush Mahmudi, 50, Dean Lisowick, 47, and Salim Ersen, 44. The neighborhood in question is the Village, recognized for being a kind of asylum and refuge for gay men, coming mainly from Eastern countries, fleeing their countries' repression of homosexuality and, in most cases, they are not out. For some years now, residents and members of the LGBT community have suspected the existence of a serial killer who aims to murder gays, since strange disappearances of homosexual men have been occurring. Police announced they had discovered the remains of six people buried in large plant beds on a property where McArthur stored landscaping equipment. He was accused of killing five men between 2012 and 2017. The defendant has not yet reached an agreement with the prosecution. So far, police have only identified the remains of Andrew Kinsman, who went missing last June, sparking a massive search for him and bringing back rumors about the serial killer. The accused, McArthur, was no stranger to the Village community. He had two children and grandchildren and had come out when he was older. He had been a regular in the neighborhood since the late 1990s. In 2003, the suspect had already been convicted of attacking a man with a metal bar in Toronto. As part of his sentence, he was ordered to stay away from michês (call boys), the Village and from using the inhalable drug poppers. According to police information, McArthur used dating websites and had sex with Kinsman, one of the victims. Still according to the authorities, the defendant became a suspect and target of investigations since November 2017. With information from the BBC website
