“The aforementioned law militates in favor of prejudice”, says Kassab when vetoing Straight Pride Day

The mayor of the City of São Paulo, Gilberto Kassab (PSD-SP), sent today, Wednesday (31), to the president of the São Paulo City Council, councilor José Police Neto (no party), the justification for vetoing the project of law by councilor Carlos Apolinário (DEM-SP), regarding the institution of the "Municipal Heterosexual Pride Day".

Mayor Kassab argues in his veto that the content of the PL "is materially unconstitutional and illegal, as well as contrary to the public interest". Because of this, the mayor says he is "forced to completely veto the text approved" by the São Paulo City Council. Gilberto Kassab also states that he "does not see any problems" with the city having another commemorative date. However, the aforementioned law disguises a false argument of "simplicity" that has had negative repercussions in the country and abroad.

Further on, the mayor of São Paulo reflects on the law being celebrated on Christmas Eve and the project's intention to protect "morals and good customs". Kassab says that it doesn't take "much effort" to understand that the author of the law wants to associate heterosexuality with "good customs" and thus say that homosexuality violates family values. The veto also says that it is possible to identify connotations of intolerance and homophobia between the lines of the text.

Finally, the veto states that the creation of "Heterosexual Pride Day makes no sense whatsoever." After all, the heterosexual population does not “suffer any type of discrimination”. The text of the veto again states that the vetoed law "does not make a point of hiding prejudice against homosexuality" and, because of this, "the aforementioned law, instead of promoting the understanding of differences, social peace, militates in the service of confrontation and prejudice".
