It continues to have a strong impact on the matter presented by Drauzio Varella No. Fantastic (TV Globo), on March 1st, about the lives of trans women in prison.

One of the most moving stories was that of Suzy, a prisoner who was hugged by the doctor after showing sadness at not receiving visitors for eight years. Days later, reports began to circulate on the internet showing that she was arrested for raping and murdering a ten-year-old child in 2010 – which generated a series of transphobic comments online.

Varella apologized to the victim's family, in case you felt offended, and explained that you wrote the report considering that it is “doctor, not judge“. He also said that “official statistics indicate that the vast majority of them are imprisoned for robbery and theft. The way in which Suzy was presented made it appear that she was part of this majority group.”

And just this same week, Suzy's lawyer, Bruna Castro, published a letter written by the inmate on Instagram, in which she recognizes the crime she committed.

“I know I made a lot of mistakes. At no point did I try to appear innocent and since that day I have truly regretted it and today I am here paying for everything I committed,” she wrote.

“Yes, I made a mistake and I am paying for it every day – every hour and every minute here in this place. Before I didn't have this opportunity, now I just have to ask for forgiveness for my mistake in the past.”

See below Suzy's full letter and the lawyer's clarifications.
