South Africa: gay teacher is beaten by student's father

A teacher from Robertson, a city located in the Western Cape province, South Africa, was physically attacked by the father of a student – the motivation for the attack is pure and simple homophobia, according to information from the IOL.

Thando Dyamara, a newly hired teacher at Masakheke Combined School, was attacked outside the school last weekend after a student insulted him using the word “moffie”, a homophobic term in the local language to refer to a man like “moffie”. effeminate".

Dyamara reprimanded the student and reported the incident to his mother. She responded by saying that her husband would “fix” the professor. Then Dyamara called the police. That's when the student's father physically attacked him repeatedly with slaps and punches. The man had a knife with him, but a friend of the victim was present and prevented any further attacks.

IOL contacted Masakheke asking for a position, but the school responded that, as the episode happened outside the school, it could not take action on the matter, although it condemned it.

Masakheke representatives stated that they will provide psychological support to Dyamara. Local police are investigating the case.
