Aliança Gay – In SP, gays come together and form a “secret” group in the financial market

Power in the hands of gays

+Available 2.0 – What was already good is now even better!

Forget about making out, idle conversations and pop divas, at Inner Circle, the focus is on exchanging professional experiences. A kind of gay freemasonry which brings together 400 members.

That's right, gays from the financial market created a closed group and promote monthly events in a bar. São Paulo. The members claim that it is just to exchange ideas about investments, income, interest rates, shares...

"You'll hardly see two guys kissing here. That's not the focus of the party", guarantees Henrique Castro, 27, who works in the investment area of the Spanish bank Santander and is one of the enthusiasts of Inner Circle, a group formed by gay executives in the financial market. Castro says that the idea is to bring together members of the area to have drinks, increase networking and exchange ideas about shares, interest rates, investments, income, mergers and acquisitions.

A POWER magazine was at the celebration of the group's three years, which has 400 members and always meets on the last Wednesday of the month. Until six months ago, the meetings were held at the Skye bar, which operates on the top floor of the Unique hotel, a five-star hotel located in the south zone of São Paulo.

Now, they are now at Chez Oscar, a bar in the heart of Jardins, an upscale neighborhood in the west zone. The founder of Inner Circle is vice president of a multinational financial group based in New York. He didn't go to the party because he was traveling. The reporter located him on Facebook, but he was unable to give an interview within the closing deadline. In his absence, Henrique Castro assumed the role of spokesman.

According to the Michaelis dictionary, inner means intimate, secret. To be part of the group you must be nominated by one of the members and also accepted by the precursors. Among the criteria, according to Castro, is “being a normal person, who happens to like men”.

“We always knew that there was a demand for a group that did not identify with the homosexual stereotype. At Inner, no one needs to adopt the stance of a gay person who goes to a club. Here, there is no standard of attitude,” she says. It seems paradoxical, since Castro uses expressions that indicate that the group's members belong to a certain socioeconomic stratum (“we are all well paid”; “no one here speaks less than three languages”; “the majority have postgraduate degrees and training abroad ”), which suggests that those aspiring to join the circle must present credentials worthy of that segment.

For those of you who had already lost hope in the gay world, this is a good reason to believe in better days ahead. Gays are organizing themselves and increasingly dominating not only the financial market.

It makes you want to join this club, right?
