Lesbian student is denied enrollment in Pará

According to information from the Homosexual Group of Transamazônica and Xingu, a girl had to drop out of school because the management took issue with the friendship she had with a classmate, in Altamira, Pará.

The school's principal and psychologist suggested to the 17-year-old's mother that the girl should undergo psychological treatment, as her behavior was “strange” when interacting with other girls. They claimed that the teenager was sick and, as if that wasn't enough, they refused to enroll in 2009.

The school management was contacted by the Homosexual Group of Transamazônica and Xingu, but refused to provide any clarification on the case. Well, the school is an institution that works on citizenship, rights and equality, so what would they have to say about such a discriminatory act?

It is worth remembering that it is possible to fight to change the reality of young LGBT people within schools by reporting abuses to the Ministry of Education, Public Ministries and class representative bodies. Article 232 of the Child and Adolescent Statute states: “Subjecting a child or adolescent under your authority, custody or supervision to shame or embarrassment: Penalty – detention from six months to two years”.

If well administered, the article criminalizes homophobia practiced by a parent or teacher against a teenager.
