After controversy, James Franco talks about harassment accusation: “I accept my responsibilities”

Parallel to the award of the Golden Globe which, among others, awarded the actor James Franco for his performance in "The Disaster Artist", at least three women, including the actress Ally Sheed, who worked with Franco in the play "The Long Shrift", accused the artist of sexual harassment on twitter.

The issue had massive repercussions on social media, gaining momentum in the wave of reports of abuse and harassment suffered by women behind the scenes in Hollywood.

Guest of the program late show, from the presenter Stephen Colbert, James Franco spoke out for the first time about the accusations, said he did not know the origins of the allegations and also stated that he assumed "his responsibilities".

"Some things came up on Twitter, I didn't read them. But I found out. I have no idea what I did to Ally Sheedy. I had nothing but good times with her. I have complete respect for her and I don't know why she's upset. She took down the tweet and I can't speak for her.

The others… In my life, I pride myself on taking responsibility for things I've done. I have to do this to maintain my health. I assume when I know there is something wrong that needs to be changed. I force myself to do this.

The things I heard that were on Twitter are inaccurate, but I completely support the people who are speaking out and being heard, because they haven't been heard for a long time. So I don't want to refute them in any way, I think it's a positive and supportive movement. I can't live if there are restitutions to be made. If I did something wrong, I will fix it. I need to do this. I don't know what else I could do.

Regarding the larger question of how to do this, I don't have answers. I think the bottom line is that we must listen. I'm here to listen and change my perspective where it's wrong. I'm completely willing and want to do this".

PROTEST

The 75th edition of the Golden Globes – an event that marks the beginning of the awards season in Hollywood – was marked by a protest organized by American film stars in solidarity with the actresses who decided, in an unprecedented uprising, to denounce big Hollywood names for harassment and sexual abuse.

The campaign "Time's Up"(Seu Tempo Acabou" – in free translation) also featured a historic speech by the presenter Oprah Winfrey which denounced racism and machismo rooted in society.

COMPLAINTS

Reports of sexual violence began to emerge in the second half of 2017, falling like a catastrophe in Hollywood. The first accused was the renowned producer Harvey Weinstein – until then belongs to the Oscar voting academy.

Another case that gained prominence in the media was that of the actor Kevin Spacey, who, after the allegations came to light, was forced to come out of the closet, admitting his homosexuality. Just like Harvey, Spacey lost space and had contracts broken.
