Representation matters! The phrase, which has been repeated assiduously in recent years, has shown results and, increasingly, LGBTs are gaining space in the market and artistic productions. Seeking to include transgender people in the Walt Disney universe which, although it has very few gay and lesbian characters, is revered by a large part of the LGBT community, a trans artist from New York recreated famous Disney characters as if they were transgender.
The works, published on the Instagram profile “Trans.disney”, belong to an artist who prefers to remain anonymous and features Cinderella, Aladdin and Mulan in transgender bodies.
“I wanted to break these clichés to show that trans people also dream of love and happiness,” the artist told HuffPost.
For him, such stories passed down from generation to generation are instilled in the imagination of these people who, although they feel attracted, do not see themselves represented.
“My goal is to show more nuances of the transformation of a transgender person, the moments they go through and what leads someone to be trans”, he explains. The choice of characters, for him, has significance for LGBT people. His first work was The Beast, from Beauty and the Beast. As he explains, “The Beast may be a metaphor for an individual who keeps his true sexuality in the closet and therefore appears like a 'monster'.”
