ATTENTION: STDs are becoming immune to medicines, warns WHO

The World Health Organization has issued a warning to the world: sexually transmitted diseases – or infections – are becoming immune to medicines. According to the institution, gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia, both caused by bacteria, have shown reluctance to antibiotics, caused by their misuse. The WHO reported that currently around 200 million people are infected annually by one of these three STDs, and that, due to the misuse of medicines, these diseases ended up becoming accustomed to the drugs, thus becoming more resistant. Until now, one of the curable STIs, the bacteria that causes gonorrhea has mutated, making it immune to all existing medications to treat the disease. The international body has advised changes in the treatment of these diseases and advised governments to closely monitor this resistance of bacteria. Another problem raised in recent months by the Brazilian Ministry of Health concerns the increase in some of these infections in the country, especially in gay men and heterosexual women. The number of cases of infections caused by syphilis and hepatitis A increased (mainly due to the “Greek kiss”). Meanwhile, the best form of prevention remains the use of male or female condoms.
