Attention: sex can be a trigger for cardiac arrest, study finds

Sex is one of the most pleasurable activities for humans, however, it can also be harmful to health – and I'm not referring to sexually transmitted infections. According to a study carried out by the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles, United States, although on a minimal scale, sex can be a trigger that leads an individual to suffer from cardiac arrest. The study, presented during a meeting of the American Heart Association, and led by doctor Sumett Chugh, showed that the incidence is higher among males. According to the report, 34 of almost 5 cardiac arrests studied during or up to an hour after sexual intercourse, indicated that 32 of the affected patients were men. This was the first time that cardiac arrest was associated with sexual activity. Previously, it was known that sexual intercourse can cause heart attacks. Unlike heart attacks, which occur when blood flow to the heart is blocked and are not necessarily fatal, cardiac arrest can be fatal to humans, unless cardiopulmonary resuscitation is performed. As Chugh told the BBC, the study that analyzed hospital records of cases of cardiac arrest in adults between 2002 and 2015, in the state of Oregon, denotes the importance of society educating itself to learn about “cardiopulmonary resuscitation for pulmonary cardiac arrest, regardless of the circumstances".
