Activists are betting on the approval of same-sex unions by the Federal Supreme Court

This Wednesday (4), the LGBT community throughout Brazil eagerly followed the vote by the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) regarding the recognition of stable unions for same-sex couples. The first to vote, as required by the rules, was the rapporteur of the matter, minister Carlos Ayres Britto, who emotionally cast his vote in favor of the topic.

However, due to the absence of minister Celso de Mello, the president of the STF, Cezar Peluso, postponed the vote until today. Because of this, the report The Cape decided to ask some leaders of the LGBT movement about their expectations regarding the continuation of the vote and how they think ministers Gilmar Mendes and Luiz Fux, who are the big doubt, should act.

Beto de Jesus, from the Edson Néris Institute (IEN), declared that this is a "very important moment for the lives of homosexuals in Brazil". The activist laments the fact that the Judiciary is playing the "role of the Legislative Branch", which, according to him, is "engrained in fundamentalist religious obscurantism and does not even know what its role is". Regarding the decision, Beto de Jesus believes that it will not be given today and that ministers Gilmar Mendes and Luiz Fux will vote against it.

Founder of Grupo E-Jovem, Deco Ribeiro said he is "certain" that the stable union will be approved. For him, it became very difficult, after Ayres Britto's vote, for opponents to declare themselves against the stable union. Regarding the report and Ayres Britto's speech, Deco stated that the judge made it clear that what is at stake "is the family and that this is above marriage". Regarding Mendes and Fux's stance, Ribeiro believes that Gilmar Mendes will vote against and ask for a review. Regarding Fux, he believes in a favorable vote.

Grupo Corsa activist Julian Rodrigues declared that minister Ayres Britto "made history and the majority of other ministers must follow the rapporteur's position". “I just hope that none of them ask for a look and stop this historic change,” he says. Regarding Gilmar Mendes' vote, Rodrigues remembers that the minister has already considered a union between two women. Regarding Fux, the activist reveals that the minister has already made several speeches in favor of affirmative policies and that he has a "progressive profile". Rodrigues bets that both will vote in favor.

Tchaka Drag Queen told the reporter that "no one in society loses with the approval of stable unions for homosexual couples." Because of this, the activist believes that the union will be approved and that the LGBT community will have equal rights. Regarding ministers Gilmar Mendes and Luiz Fux, Tchaka follows the same path as Julian Rodrigues and remembers that both have already taken favorable stances on LGBT issues and believes that both will vote in favor.
