The actor Ncuti Gatwa, 27, made a rather touching revelation this week.

Known for playing Eric, Otis' (Asa Butterfield) openly gay best friend in fri Education, a Netflix comedy series, the Scottish-African told the magazine The Big Issue who was left without a place to live after months of not finding work.

“Being a 25-year-old man with no money or job affected my self-esteem, the rejection became unbearable. Auditions weren’t just acting jobs, they were [potential] lifesavers,” he said.

Gatwa said he survived with the help of friends; One hosted him at home and the other made money transfers so he could buy food.

“I developed depression. But I never let people know how low I was feeling. That would have been another burden for my friends to handle. My mind has become my biggest enemy.”

Fortunately, everything changed for the better when the talented actor landed a role in fri Education – and became a favorite among fans of the series.
