Evangelical group organizes protest against bill that criminalizes homophobia

This Wednesday (1st) a demonstration is being organized in front of Congress in Brasília against the bill that criminalizes homophobia.

The event is organized by the evangelical bench. Pastors from all over Brazil are using their spaces on TV and radio to call the faithful to the demonstration. The 60 deputies on the bench and some senators, such as Bishop Marcelo Crivella (PRB-RJ), must participate.

The intention is to demand that any restriction on preaching against gays in churches be removed from the law. Crivella should join forces this Tuesday (31) with Senator Marta Suplicy (PT-SP), rapporteur of the project, and Toni Reis, president of ABGLT.

The bishop will propose that the bill prepared by Marta be extinguished. Another would take its place, created by the evangelicals themselves, which would leave pastors with complete freedom in their speeches in temples and increase the penalties for crimes against homosexuals.

Proponents of Marta Suplicy's project believe that there is no point in increasing penalties for crimes if the law is unable to reduce incitement to prejudice and violence, which occurs in most of the pastors' messages.
