Lesbian kiss at memorial sparks protests in Berlin

A video showing a lesbian kiss that will be shown at a memorial dedicated to the homosexual victims of the Holocaust is generating controversy in Berlin.

Opened in May 2008 in honor of the approximately 15 thousand homosexuals persecuted by Nazism, the memorial was designed by architects Ingar Dragset and Michael Elmgree. The monument has a small window, where the public can enjoy a video, which currently shows a kiss between two men.

Every two years, the plan was to change the sex of the couples appearing in the video. Alexander Zinn and other Holocaust experts protested the idea, sending a letter to German Culture Minister Michael Neumann and Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit arguing that the proposed lesbian kiss would distort history. According to them, lesbians were not victims of the Holocaust.

The video is expected to premiere in May 2010. Until then, authorities have promised to analyze the protest.
