Brasília hosts seminars to discuss LGBT rights

This Tuesday (25) and Wednesday (26), representatives from the 27 Brazilian States and guests will participate in the II LGBT Advocacy Seminar, which aims to plan and reinforce actions in the National Congress and in state, municipal and district legislatures.

The political advocacy strategies for 2009 aim to contribute to the LGBT community, and thus advance the achievements of equal rights and the fight against homophobia. The II Seminar is financed by the Special Secretariat for Human Rights of the Presidency of the Republic (SEDH/PR). It is organized and executed by the Brazilian Association of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transvestites and Transsexuals (ABGLT), through the Aliadas Project and in partnership with the Parliamentary Front for LGBT Citizenship.

The II Advocacy Seminar precedes the V National LGBT Seminar, the fifth edition of which will take place on November 27th at the Federal Senate. The seminar's agenda will deal with two important Bills for millions of citizens in Brazil: PLC 122/2006, which will punish discrimination practices against LGBT, and PL 1151/1995, by former deputy Marta Suplicy, which approved will establish civil unions between people of the same sex in the country.

The V National Seminar is an initiative of the Parliamentary Front for LGBT Citizenship, in partnership with ABGLT/Projeto Aliadas, the Human Rights and Participatory Legislation Commissions of the Chamber of Deputies, with funding from SEDH/PR. The seminar will be held from 9 am, in plenary 19 in the Alexandre Costa wing of the Federal Senate.

The virtual campaign “No Homophobia”, developed by the LGBT movement in Rio de Janeiro with the coordination of Grupo Arco-Íris, will be officially launched at the National Congress. The campaign aims to raise awareness and mobilize society in general about the importance of approving PLC 122/2006 which is being processed in the Federal Senate. The campaign can be accessed on the website www.naohomophobia.com.br.

The complete schedule of both seminars is available on the website www.abglt.org.br/aliadas.
