Britney Spears will be honored for her importance to the LGBT community

Pop, or rather, pop divas, have long been a symbol of the LGBT community. Madonna, Cher, Lady Gaga, Cindy Lauper, Rihanna, Britney Spears, among many others, are somehow part of the movement that fights for the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people. However, these names are constantly associated with and honored by LGBT entities. The little pop princess will be the next honored by GLAAD, an American LGBT protection and information organization, with the Vanguard Award, an award that celebrates figures with significant importance to the community. “An undisputed icon, Britney Spears entertained the world while embodying the spirit of the Vanguard Award by speaking out about issues her fans face – from the Dream Act (about illegal immigrant children) to anti-transgender laws in Texas. She is a force in the world of music who used her global platform to share messages of love and acceptance, something the world needs more than ever”, highlighted the president of the institution in a statement. GLAAD also highlighted contributions made by the artist to Spirit Day (against bullying and humiliation of LGBT people), the LGBT Meet&Greet to inform anti-bullying campaigns and demonstrations against American laws that harm the community.
