Campaign asks Europeans not to vote for homophobic candidates

The elections in Europe take place on June 7th and the State Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals (FELGBT) has launched a campaign asking Europeans not to vote for extremists and homophobes and to favor those who fight for a more equal world , inclusive and sympathetic to the gay cause. The campaign's motto is "Elect equality for lesbians, gays, transsexuals and bisexuals".

In addition to television insertions, banners and posters, the Federation will contact candidates to ask them to include the LGBT issue in their materials. On June 2nd, a survey will be published with the parties most in tune with the cause. This work will be done in partnership with ILGA (International Gay and Lesbian Association).

For now, the only openly homophobic candidate is from the Popular Party (PP), Mayor Oreja, who has positioned himself against all measures taken by the current Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (PSOE) regarding homosexual issues. Zapatero's socialist government was the one that made the most progress with regard to LGBT rights.

The president of FELGBT, Antonio Poveda, said that it is necessary to believe in a Europe where there is "citizenship and where the rights of LGBT people are assumed by the State". "Sexual diversity must be a value worked on in all areas, especially in education", he stated.
