Canal Brasil celebrates LGBT Pride Month with special programming; check out

In June, LGBT Pride Month is celebrated worldwide. And the Brazil Channel created a special program to celebrate the diversity of points of view and experiences.

Films, series, talk shows and other non-fiction programs make up the channel's varied and colorful schedule. Check it out below.

Linn da Quebrada is a figure with revolutionary airs across different spectrums. Trans singer and activist, and presenter of the program “TransMissão”, alongside Jup do Bairro, she makes her art and her life a political and libertarian act for LGBTQ+ activism. The documentary co-produced by Canal Brasil in partnership with Válvula Produções has the performer as the central point of a broad discussion about gender identity, homophobia, sexual fluidity and social standards, all based on a mix of moments that range from private life and the artist's homely activities, performances in bathrooms and saunas to the extravagant shows she performs.

In the middle of Christmas Eve, the character goes on an unbridled search for the man and, with doses of humor, goes through the underworld of drugs and prejudice that hide in the dark side of Hollywood.

Synopsis: The award-winning film takes place in Recife, in 1978, a time of great censorship by the military regime against cultural manifestations considered subversive. Staged on a small stage for a small audience, the plays are full of mocking, sarcastic and anarchic verses and dances, with a lot of nudity and humor. Not far away, Fininha serves in a barracks as a soldier and suffers intimidation from colleagues for his supposed homosexuality. The recruit is sent to the concert hall to deliver a package to Paulette and a devastating and revolutionary passion begins with the protagonist. Featured at the Rio Festival in the categories Best Fiction Film by the popular jury, Actor, Supporting Actor, Fipresci Awards and Jury Special in Fiction. At the Gramado Festival, he won the Kikitos for Best Feature Film, Actor and Musical Score.

Synopsis: The Canal Brasil co-production, chosen by the public at the Rio Festival as best documentary and winner of the best film category by popular vote at the South By Southwest Festival (USA), rescues the story of the first generation of transvestite artists to be successful in the bustling cultural scene from Rio de Janeiro. The protagonists recall how they discovered their vocation for singing and theater, the exaggerated costumes of the first shows and the influence of star shows held in the 50s at the Carlos Gomes and João Caetano theaters. The testimonies are interspersed with archive images, including videos, photos and magazine covers, behind-the-scenes preparations for the new show, rehearsals and narrations from the director herself as she remembers her childhood living alongside these divas.
