Cancer that killed Nara Almeida is more common in men

The stomach cancer that caused the death of model Nara Almeida last Monday, 21, is more common in men over the age of 50, according to the Brazilian Association of Digestive Endoscopy (Sobed). According to the agency, this type of cancer is not usually very common in females. In the case of the digital influencer, there was a metastasis in the peritoneum, which is also considered rare in women under the age of 25. According to Sobed, this type of cancer can be triggered by environmental factors, linked to the person's routine, in addition to genetic factors. The initial symptoms of the disease are nausea, mild stomach pain and persistent burning, which can be confused with heartburn, causing the patient to seek medical help late. The entity believes that 20 new cases of the disease will appear in the country in the next two years, the majority of which will be among men. Among the types of cancer, gastric cancer is the third leading cause of death for men and the fifth leading cause of death for women. Experts recommend that individuals over 30 years of age who experience symptoms such as recurrent and persistent pain in the stomach region, associated with loss of appetite and anemia, seek a doctor for further investigation. When discovered early, the chances of a cure are greater than 80%. When diagnosis occurs late, however, the mortality rate is eight out of every 10 patients.
