Carpaneda talks about his work and says he will bring the work “Bolsonaro's Sex Party” to Brazil

The plastic artist Fernando Carpaneda was the author of the commented Bolsonaro's Sex Party sculpture, which was created as a form of protest against federal deputy Jair Bolsonaro (PP-RJ). The Brazilian, who lives in New York, was interviewed by journalist Bruno Astuto, from Época magazine.

In the interview, Fernando talks about his work, which is currently exhibited at The Leslie Lohman Gay Art Foundation, the first Gay Art Museum in the United States, located in New York.

"In the same way that Bolsonaro has a guaranteed right and parliamentary immunity to go on TV and speak ill of gays and black people, I, as a Brazilian, also have the right to express myself in public about the deputy," Carpaneda told the journalist.

In almost all of his works, Fernando features naked men and pornography. "I create work that most visual artists don't have the courage to do. I never intended to be militant, but my work ended up putting me in that militant position in some way," he says.

Fernando believes that television denigrates the image of gays, as it shows caricatures of the community. "Parents imagine that having a homosexual child means having a Vera-Verão or a Pit Bicha at home and they are scared to death of it. TV denigrates homosexuals whenever it can. My sculptures show men loving other men, drag queens, punks and marginalized people. When People go to one of my exhibitions and feel attacked by works that show strong men kissing. In their minds, that is unacceptable."

The artist also spoke of where his inspiration came from to create the work that "honors" the deputy. "We don't need an idiot, misinformed person who calls himself a Christian, to encourage discrimination and violence against black people and gays. Some people don't understand the work, but the sculpture also addresses a protest against homophobic campaigns like that of the American Baptist Church." God hates Fags' ('God hates Fags'). I change the word 'hates' and add the word 'loves', he says.

Carpaneda says he intends to bring an exhibition with his works to Brazil. With the support of the galleries PLUS and Choque Cultural he should exhibit in Brasília in June and bring with him Bolsonaro's Sex Party.
