Cartel011 hosts exhibition by Mexican artist Carlos Radriguez

From June 20th, Cartel 011 welcomes the work of Mexican artist Carlos Radriguez. The exhibition entitled “The Garden” features 10 paintings painted in oil, as well as never-before-seen screen prints that will be displayed on the space’s mural, located in Pinheiros. The work, curated and exhibited by Bebel Abreu, is inspired by the painting “The Garden of Earthly Delícias” painted by Hieronymus Bosch in 1504.

Known for approaching eroticism and LGBTQ sexuality in his works in an irreverent way and with non-standard men's bodies, Carlos Radriguez brings his exhibitionVisiting Brazil the way he sees the country: exuberant, free and tropical. For the artist, it is important to talk about the topic due to the current scenario: “I think it is essential that we occupy the spaces of narratives with art and messages of resistance and love, of empathy and beauty, of freedom and respect”. Radriguez also justifies the choice of eroticism as the theme of his works “A naked body can also be a political and social stance and sexual impulse can also be a trigger for creative work. Touching these issues is also touching the censorship, vulnerability and prejudices of a society that is scared to recognize and accept what is different.”

During the opening of the exhibition, the artist will do a live painting to complete a large mural of Cartel011 that complements the exhibition. This mural will be executed in charcoal and will have the same drawing language used in the publication to be presented, making a connection between the work process and the final result of the artist's work, represented by paintings and silkscreens.

During the exhibition period, there will be a Pop Up Store to sell products such as screen prints (from R$ 400,00), posters, pins, underwear, as well as an exclusive t-shirt from a collab with Cartel 011 and the book “The Garden”, which are the studies made for the exhibition, but worked in a different way (line and digital color).

“I discovered Radriguez's work through a wonderful newsletter called NUsleDEr, by Rodrigo Turra, and it was love at first sight – we soon started talking and soon began publishing his work in Brazil. The connection he makes with “The Garden of Earthly Delights”, by Dutch painter Hieronymous Bosch, could not be more current. I imagine what the reaction of people here will be, more than 500 years later”, says curator Bebel Abreu.

On the 22nd, the eve of the São Paulo Gay Parade (considered the largest in the world), Carlos Radriguez will be responsible for painting the facade of the El Cabriton store, on Rua Augusta, from 14pm.
