Homosexual couples dedicate more time to their children, research shows

The fact that children are planned and are not "accidents" is one of the factors that lead homosexual couples to spend more time with their children.

The traditional Brazilian family didn't expect this, did they?

A study carried out by researchers at the Population Research Center at the University of Texas concluded that families formed by couples homosexuals tend to dedicate more time to their children than couples heterosexuals.

The research, published in the British newspaper "The Independence", analyzed information provided by the North American Census with the participation of more than 40 thousand couples.

Two-mother pairs spent an average of 100 minutes a day with their children, and two-father pairs spent just less than that. By comparison, parents in heterosexual couples spend an average of just 50 minutes a day with their children.

The hours analyzed include those spent on activities involving children: reading to them, playing with them, helping with homework, bathing them and taking them to the doctor, for example. Activities such as watching television or cleaning with the child nearby did not count.

The author of the research, Kate Prickett, said: "Our findings support the idea that same-sex couples invest as much – or even more – time in their children than heterosexual couples."

The study does not aim to clarify the reasons for this phenomenon, but Kate ventured a guess, stating that the way families are formed must influence this result.

The editor of Diva magazine pointed out: "Homosexual parents tend to invest more time planning how they will have their children – nothing happens 'by accident', after all. The fear of discrimination at school from heterosexual parents and teachers should also make some of these couples try even harder."
