A homosexual couple denounces that they were fired from work due to prejudice after making their union official, in goiânia.

Stock assistants, Geferson Ribeiro de Souza, 21 years old, and Daniemerson Brito da Silva, 26, say that they were fired from the company the day they returned from marriage leave with the allegation that they had unduly missed two days, which, according to them, did not happen. The company denies that the dismissal is related to the sexual orientation of the young people.

“I attribute our dismissal to prejudice. There was no other reason for us to be fired,” said Daniemerson.

The boys dated for two years. On November 5th, they registered their marriage at a registry office and, shortly afterwards, held a ceremony to celebrate the union. They say they went to the company they worked for, WB Componentes, the following Monday, November 7, to present the marriage certificate.

According to the young people, the Human Resources department informed them that, because of their marriage leave, they should return to work on Thursday (10). Upon returning, they were fired.
"We returned on Thursday and were informed that we would be terminated because we harmed the company by missing two days. But that was the day they decided. Colleagues told us that it would be ugly for the company to have two married guys", reported Silva.
According to Geferson, he already worked there before meeting her husband. During the relationship, the young man says he asked his superior for a place for his then boyfriend. In January of this year, Daniemerson was hired by the company.

WB Componentes denies that the dismissal was motivated by the sexual orientation of the young people. By phone, the company's lawyer, Tabajara Póvoa, told G1 that their dismissal “had nothing to do with any type of discrimination because the company does not engage in this conduct.” He said that, to preserve young people, he will not expose the factors that led to the dismissal.

Furthermore, according to Póvoa, since hiring Daniemerson the company knew that he had a relationship with Geferson and this did not prevent the procedure. “If this was not a problem when hiring, it would not be a reason for dismissal. The fact of formalizing a role makes no difference”, declared the lawyer.

Series of humiliations

Geferson says that he always suffered from ridicule, but it increased a lot when his partner started working there. According to the young man, the couple were the target of jokes from their direct boss and at least a dozen other colleagues.

“They called us dolls, fagots, queers. We only heard that, no one called us by name. If they were going to introduce a new collaborator, they would say: 'Be careful, he's going to hit on you. He’s a man who catches a man,’” he reports.

The couple says they felt humiliated and embarrassed. In fact, he had already thought about leaving his job because of prejudice. However, the young people did not resign because they needed money. “We felt down, humiliated. We would leave home early and come home stressed”, recalls Geferson.

WB Componentes' defense states that the company “never became aware” of the situation and that “it was taken by surprise by these allegations”.

The couple's lawyer, Danilo Belo Honório, argues that the company knew about the situation. He says he will go to court with a claim for compensation for the moral damages suffered by his clients.

“This type of discrimination is an affront to the principle of human dignity. In this case, it was the employer's duty to prevent the practice of these discriminatory acts in the workplace and the company uses it as a justification for dismissal by claiming that two days were missed after the wedding leave, but this is not true. Prejudice and discrimination were clearly characterized both by the fact that they were fired after the wedding and by all the jokes and teasing endured during their work", concludes Honório.
