On January 13th of this year, the constitutional amendment that allows equal marriage (and legalized abortion too) began to be implemented in Northern Ireland. The lesbian couple Sharni Edwards and Robyn Peoples became the first to legally marry in the country this week.

After being engaged for five years, they sealed their marriage last Tuesday (11), the day they completed their sixth year of relationship, in Carrickfergus, County Antrim. The couple live in Belfast.

“It was a coincidence,” Edwards told Guardian. “We wanted to go ahead with a civil union, but when the amendment was approved, it was the timing perfect, a happy coincidence. We couldn’t be more grateful.”

Equal marriage was approved in the country almost six years after it passed in neighboring England, Wales and Scotland. In July 2019, the law was passed in Northern Ireland.

Congratulations to the couple! Love always wins.
