Gay marriage grows 5 times more than between men and women, points out IBGE

 
The percentage growth of same-sex marriages it was almost five times higher than among men and women in 2015, according to data from the 2015 Civil Registry Statistics, released on Thursday (24) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
 
Unions between spouses of different sexes increased by 2,7%, while those between spouses of the same sex increased by 15,7%, representing 0,5% of total registered marriages.
 
In 2013, the National Council of Justice (CNJ) approved Resolution 175, which determines that all registry offices enable or celebrate civil marriage and the conversion of stable unions into same-sex marriages.
 
Compared to 2013, civil unions between same-sex spouses increased by 51,7%. In absolute numbers, there were 1.131.707 marriages between people of opposite sexes and 5.614 between people of the same sex in 2015.
 
In 20 states there was an increase in civil marriage registrations between 2014 and 2015. Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul had growth above 10%, and Acre, 40%. The states of Paraíba and Sergipe showed the biggest reductions, of 7,7% and 6,3% respectively.
