Russian President Vladimir Putin recently stated that as long as he holds office, gay marriage will not be legalized in the country.
“As far as 'father number 1' and 'father number 2' is concerned, I have spoken publicly about this before and I will say it again: as long as I am president, this will not happen. There will be father and mother,” Putin said, according to Reuters news agency.
The president made the statement during a meeting with a Russian government commission to discuss constitutional changes.
Russia is often considered one of the most dangerous countries for LGBT people. Persecution, violence and hostility are frequent for the Russian LGBT community. In 2019, a activist was brutally murdered by an extermination group.
