According to the Brazilian Association of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transvestites and Transsexuals, 370 homosexual couples managed to convert their stable union into marriage in the country.
The number has been calculated since May 2011, when the Federal Supreme Court legalized stable unions between people of the same sex in Brazil.
According to judge Maria Berenice Dias, a specialist in homosexual rights, the number of conversions should be higher. This is because in some Brazilian cities and states the procedure for converting a stable union can be done directly at the registry office, without the need to go to court.
