O The Cape advanced the creation of the first Comprehensive Health Center for Transvestites and Transsexual Women and Men in Rio de Janeiro, which was announced during the inauguration ceremony of the Working Group that will prepare the project.
The Comprehensive Health Center, which will operate from 2014, will be located at the Policlínica Piquet Carneiro headquarters, of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), in the north of the city.
“We will meet in the next two or three months to produce a set of guidelines that will guide the production of the center’s implementation project. We will work to look at issues of physical structure, aspects of care protocol, care routine, how to integrate the different areas of health and also include citizenship perspectives because it is a totally discriminated population”, said Cláudio Nascimento, coordinator of the state program Rio sem Homofobia and superintendent of the State Secretariat of Social Assistance and Human Rights, to Agencia Brasil.
According to the rector of UERJ, Ricardo Vieiralves, the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital, in Vila Isabel, is one of the hospitals in Brazil that performs sexual adjustment surgery. However, there is a great demand for services.
Furthermore, irregular hormonal treatments, used by transsexuals and transvestites, cause several diseases that require rapid treatment. “Several transsexuals and transvestites use inappropriate products. This means, derivation from cancer, derivation from other types of disease. There is a psychological problem. There is a problem with reintegration into the job market”, declared Vieralves.
The idea of creating the Comprehensive Health Center for Transvestites and Transsexual Women and Men is precisely to meet this demand and meet the needs of this population, classified as the one that suffers most from prejudice in society, as well as exclusion and discrimination in the job market.
