Chicago elects its first black and gay mayor

Chicago elected its first black and gay mayor last Tuesday (2). Former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot defeated Toni Preckwinkle to become mayor of the third largest city in the United States.

Lori received 74% of the vote, compared to just 26% for Toni. Since 1937, Chicago voters have elected only one black mayor and one female mayor. This is the first time that a black, gay woman has been elected.
