Chile may approve civil unions for gay couples

The Chilean government is willing to legalize civil unions between people of the same sex.

According to the Chilean newspaper "La Tercera", the country's government is preparing its legislation to legally recognize civil unions between gay couples.

The bill, which is expected to be presented to Congress next week, will grant legal rights to gay couples who have lived together for more than a year.

Last month, Chilean President Sebastián Piñera demonstrated his support by approving the project. With this, he intends to guarantee "the dignity of these couples", declared Piñera.
