Chile: Four men are convicted of the death of young gay Daniel Zamudio in Santiago

Chile's justice system found the four men guilty of beating and killing 24-year-old Daniel Zamudio. The crime happened in 2012.
 
The victim was found unconscious in a park in the center of Santiago. Zamudio had part of his ear torn off, his body was marked by neo-Nazi symbols and he was also stoned. O The young man was taken to a hospital where he remained for 25 days until he died of brain death
 
According to the judge, Juan Carlos Urrutia, the four murderers, Patricio Ahumada, Alejandro Angulo, Raul Lopez and Fabian Mora, had an attitude of "total disregard for human life".
 
The murder of the young man, which shocked the country, motivated congress to approve a law against homophobia and punishing hate crimes.

"It's typical of us Chileans that an accident has to happen before we can pass a law. My son won't go back, but in this case it was good for Chile," said Daniel's father, Ivan Zamudio.
 
The four accused of the young man's death will be sentenced on October 28th and could face a sentence of 8 years to life in prison.
