City in the interior of Ceará creates Homosexual Awareness Day

The small Limoeiro do Norte, in Ceará, was ahead of many other cities in the country and this week approved Homosexual Awareness Day for the first Saturday of July. The mayor of Limoeiro, João Dilmar, also signed a document defending sexual rights and condemning any forms of discrimination in society. City resident and mother of a 26-year-old gay man, Adalgiza Lopes (PHOTO) is a representative of mothers who have homosexual children at home and celebrated the City Council's decision. “You don’t have to be gay or afraid of being called gay to participate. Support our cause and you will be supporting a relative, or, who knows, a child in the future.” Adalgiza is known for her support of GLBT causes in Limoeiro do Norte and is active in the Association of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgenders (AAGLBT). During the session, she read a letter, entitled “What is love?”, moving those present, and affirming her commitment to diversity. “The important thing is to be happy, regardless of gender”, “today I understand perfectly that we must live with differences, and that this is not an illness; We deal with the matter openly at home.”
