Mexico City offers honeymoon to the first gay couple to marry in Argentina

The approval of gay marriage in Argentina promises to also affect the economies of other countries. Mexico City, for example, took the lead and has already offered a free honeymoon to the first couple who get married in Argentina.

It was "a recognition of tolerance, but also aims to promote gay-friendly tourism in Mexico City," Tourism Secretary Alejandro Rojas said in a statement.

After a historic vote in the Senate, which faced strong retaliation in the country from the majority of religious conservatives, Argentina became the first country in Latin America to legalize marriage between homosexuals.

"About 15% of global tourism – or 150 million tourists per year – is gay-friendly, and gay tourists are considered different, as they are respectful and open-handed, spending 47% more than heterosexual tourists," said Rojas , which intends to acquire sponsorship from hotels and restaurants and the resort of Cancún, in addition to free tickets for the couple to Mexico City.

Gay marriage and same-sex adoption were allowed in Mexico City in December last year.
