Good news for anyone waiting for sexual enhancement surgery. The State Department of Health has increased the number of vacancies at Hospital das Clínicas, the procedure that was carried out 3 times a year will now be carried out 12 times.
Representatives from the Health Department and Hospital das Clínicas are expected to meet with the board of directors of the São Paulo Regional Council of Medicine in the coming weeks to inform about the expansion. The HC will gain reinforcements in its team of urologists, endocrinologists and psychologists.
"At Hospital das Clínicas there are 20 people undergoing clinical treatment. But we hope that, with this new service, it will be possible to have a clearer understanding of how many need this type of surgical intervention," said the state secretary of Health, Luiz Roberto Barradas Barata, to the newspaper Agora .
In August last year, 253 transsexuals were registered at the Hospital das Clínicas alone. According to Alessandra Saraiva, director of the Secretariat for Transvestites and Transsexuals of the LGBT Pride Parade (APOGLBT), in private clinics, sexual adjustment surgery costs between R$20 and R$26.
To carry out the procedure in public hospitals, the patient goes through a screening process that takes into account the clinical and psychological aspects of the candidate. Follow-up after surgery can last up to two years. "In this type of surgery, psychological aspects are of fundamental importance", says the secretary.

It was opened two weeks ago, in São Paulo, the first medical outpatient clinic aimed at transvestites and transsexuals. An initiative of the State Department of Health, the space will have capacity for around 300 consultations per month (an average of 15 to 20 per day) and is located in the CRT/Aids STD Center, in the Vila Mariana neighborhood, two blocks away from the Santa Cruz subway. The inauguration was attended by the governor of São Paulo, José Serra.
