Classic of gay literature is re-released in Brazil

Originally published in 1968, the book "Orgia", by Tulio Carella, which was a rarity and when found in second-hand bookstores cost more than R$300, is now published in a new edition by Editora Opera Prima.

And why is "Orgy" considered a classic of gay literature? It is the diary of the Argentine poet, playwright and essayist Tulio Carella, who came to Brazil following an invitation from Hermilo Borba Filho, in 1960. In Pernambuco, his life was transformed when he discovered "the dark color of the northeastern people" that they attracted "like an abyss".

His sexual contact with the "young black men" of Pernambuco took place during the early hours of the morning, when he took breaks from his academic studies and "played" in a libertine adventure with "rude men and workers with little education". In Brazil, Carella was persecuted by the military and deported to Argentina, where he wrote his work.

To the newspaper "Folha de São Paulo", the writer and responsible for spreading Carella in Brazil, João Silvério Trevisan, author of "Devassos no Paraíso", said that "Orgy" is one of the "most emblematic and striking things, including for its literary quality ".

Now relaunched, the book has a suggested price of R$64.
