With good humor, “differentiated people” hold a protest in Higienópolis; see photos

Around 700 people showed up this Saturday (14), in front of the Pátio Higienópolis shopping mall, to protest against the stance of the São Paulo state government which, by giving in to the lobby of the neighborhood residents' association, gave up on the idea of building a station by subway on Avenida Angélica.

But what caused outrage among people who live in the neighborhood and, mainly, among those who don't live there were some statements from residents justifying why they were against the subway station. A lady told the press that the subway would attract "different people" to the neighborhood. Others said that Higienópolis is a "very traditional" neighborhood and that because of this it cannot be "invaded by the people".

Such statements were enough to arouse the anger of the population. Through a Facebook page, internet users called for a protest that became known as the "Barbecue of different people". During this Saturday's event, what we saw were not exactly "different people": numerous residents joined the party alongside students and some union members who were responsible for the barbecue in the middle of the street.

With good humor, the "people" roasted sausage, cheese and other types of meat to the sound of pagode. To avoid confusion, the Military Police closed the street. At around 16:45 pm, some of the protesters went on a march through the streets of the neighborhood, while others preferred to enter the shopping mall.
