With Festa da Chiquita, ABGLT closes congress in Pará

After five days of intense work, the III Congress of the Brazilian Association of Gays, Lesbians, Transvestites and Transsexuals (ABGLT) ended its activities with cultural events. The first part took place at the Beira Rio hotel, where the congressmen stayed, and the program included drag shows and an indoor performance of Festa da Chiquita.

Once again, drag artist Montserrat was the master of ceremonies. The person who performed again was Gal Gosto from Belém do Pará, but the public was eagerly awaiting the Festa da Chiquita, which is part of the classic celebration of transvestites in Belém and is held annually after the transfer of the image of Our Lady of Nazaré. The party is considered profane by the Catholic Church.

But it wasn't the entire Chiquita block that showed up there. The person responsible for bringing a small sample of the energy of the famous party was the performer Eloy Iglesias, who rocked the Cazuza covers and made people dance like crazy. Iglesias' performance is visceral and completely politicized, from one song to another the singer amends phrases of prevention and a political nature. Things from Belém.

During the break between Chiquita's performance, it was Glenda Áquila's turn to take the stage. At 1,80m tall, the beauty twirled and shook her hair nervously. Afterwards, Iglesias returned to end his performance and performed "Brasil" by Cazuza. After the cultural presentations, two parties were scheduled for the end of the congress at the Boka Xika and Lux clubs. The people came in droves.

Along the lines of the 2008st National LGBT Conference, held in 21, the ABGLT congress prepared a letter with all the propositions and demands of the LGBT movement raised during the political meeting. The document was called Carta de Belém and was read and revised on April 04st at around 11am.

Among the things highlighted in the document is the issue considered fundamental by all participants: moving forward with everything that was discussed at the National LGBT Conference, held in Brasília in June 2008. It is noted that this speech has marked the complaints of many organized groups, but little became reality after the national meeting.

The issue of trans people in schools was also highlighted as an urgent demand to be addressed. The holding of the second conference, previously scheduled for the first half of 2010, is also part of the focus. Once the Belém Charter was endorsed, Toni Reis called on all those people who somehow made the ABGLT congress happen.

One of the most emotional speeches at the closing was by activist Claudio Nascimento (Grupo Arco-Íris), who became emotional and cried when quoting Harvey Milk's famous phrase: "I want to recruit you". The next ABGLT congress should take place in Belo Horizonte.
