Finally some support! Now in São Paulo, the capital, victims of homophobia will receive legal and psychological care, without paying anything for it. The city hall of São Paulo last Friday (27), opened an exclusive service center for the LGBT population.
 
The LGBT Citizenship Center in São Paulo will be the largest service for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals and transvestites in the country. It replaces the old center to combat homophobia and will work 12 hours per day.

In a speech at the inauguration ceremony, the Assistant Secretary for Human Rights, Rogério Sottili, called for a change of vision in society: "We don't just need to look at vulnerable populations, including the LGBT population, as just a public safety problem (…). We need to look at this population as the population that deserves respect, deserves be valued for its diversity and deserves every care from the public authorities to value its right to citizenship."
 
The space will have a technical team made up of 20 professionals, including psychologists, social workers, lawyers and human rights agents.
 
"I am delivering equipment, with the commitment of our mayor Haddad, that will make a difference in the lives of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transvestites and transsexuals, who, historically, are denied the full exercise of citizenship", highlighted Dediane Souza, coordinator from the LGBT Citizenship Center.
 
The center is located on Rua do Arouche, in the center of São Paulo, a traditional meeting point for the LGBT community. The space will offer legal, social and psychological advice.
 
"A person who suffers some type of homophobia, lesbophobia or transphobia does generate some type of psychological damage, psychological consequences. Having this reception center is fundamental to rescuing the individual's dignity and mental health", explained the psychologist José Luis Gomes.
 
The investment in the LGBT citizenship center is R $ 1 million, with R$800 from the city of São Paulo and R$200 from the Human Rights Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic.
 
The mayor of São Paulo, Fernando Haddad, also called for a transformation in the mentality of the entire population: "Change people's behavior in the face of this social problem, which victimizes so many people, either with violence and, sometimes, with death itself. So, we have to be very attentive to this and change the culture, change the mentality.”
