Celebrations on Saturday mark “LGBT Pride Day” in Brazil

On Saturday, June 28th, World LGBT Pride Day will be celebrated. We have gathered the celebrations that will take place in different parts of Brazil.

Em São Paulo, the NGO ABCD's – Ação sprout for citizenship and sexual diversity, will hold a photo exhibition of the first three editions of the Santo André LGBT Pride Parade in the lobby of the Municipal Chamber of Santo André, in greater SP.

The exhibition will be free and will be open to the public from 8am to 20pm.

No Rio de Janeiro, Grupo Cabo Free will hold a demonstration against homophobia in Praia do Forte, in front of the Municipal Theater from 18pm. Rainbow banners and flags will be spread and 300 candles will be lit on the small white sand dune.

According to the President of the Group, Claudio Lemos, "the time is now to draw attention not only to the cases that have gained attention in the national media, such as that of Sergeants Laci and Fernando, from Brasília, persecuted by the armed forces after assuming their sexual orientation, but also make visible cases such as that of Sergeant Fabiane, from the 17th Logistics Battalion of Juiz de Fora, expelled from the corporation after undergoing sex change surgery, lesbian teachers Carmem and Noyr, dismissed from Campo Grande City Hall and many other cases of homophobia which we are still victims of on a daily basis".

On Farme de Amoedo Street, in Ipanema, flags will be placed on all electrical poles commemorating the 40th anniversary of Stonewall – the bar in New York where gays and transvestites rebelled against police action, on June 28, 1969, leading to If this fact, the date of the celebration of LGBT Pride.

The municipal secretary of Social Action, Marcelo Garcia, says that Farme was chosen "because it is the street most identified with gay culture" and added "it is our Village" – the neighborhood where Stonewall is located.

Curitiba

In the city of Curitiba, the documentary "Vida Fora do Armário" will be shown on Friday night (27/06) at 20pm at the cinematheque. The event precedes the Curitiba Diversity Parade which takes place on Sunday, June 29th.

The documentary portrays the life stories of homosexual people: a gay man, a lesbian couple, a male transsexual, a female transsexual and a heterosexual ally of the LGBT cause. The short film is produced by the Associação Paranaense da Parada da Diversidade (APPAD) and was produced in partnership with the Ministry of Culture (MINC)

Recife

The Gay Leões do Norte Movement will hold an exhibition table and debates on the "20 years of promulgation of the Citizen Constitution and the citizen rights whose access is denied to the GLBT population" in the auditorium of the OAB/PE (Brazilian Bar Association – Pernambuco Section ), at 18pm.

At the end of the debates, there will be the solemn launch of the Brazilian Post and Telegraph Company stamp in honor of the date, produced in partnership with the NGO.

Salvador

On Friday (27/06) the Salvador City Council will hold a special session "INTERNATIONAL GAY PRIDE DAY", at 19:00 pm, in its Auditorium.
