Beyoncé was the big winner of the ceremony, the pop star took home eight trophies, including the main category of "Best Video of the Year". With this, the singer becomes the biggest award record holder in the history of the VMA, a title that previously belonged to Madonna.

In total, Beyoncé has won 24 awards while the Queen of Pop has 20.

Another major highlight of the event was Rihanna, who was honored with the trophy of "Michael Jackson Vanguard Award".The award was presented by Drake, who in his speech practically made a public declaration of love.

"Some artists need to play a character to achieve success. Others need to minimize their natural instincts. She is successful by doing something that no one in the music industry does, she is herself," said the Canadian. "She's someone I've been in love with since I was 22. She's one of my best friends."

On stage, Rihanna thanked the honor. "This is a big moment in my career. When I think about the Vanguard Award, all I remember is my country. They will feel so proud. It's their first award. My success is not just mine, it's my family's, It's from my fans, it's from my country, it's from the Caribbean, it's from the woman, it's from the black woman", he declared.
