Conservative, Chile approves homosexual civil union

Another step towards human rights took place in Chile this Wednesday (28): civil unions between homosexual couples and unmarried heterosexual couples.

The achievement occurred after four years of debate in the legislature on the project called the Civil Union Agreement. The project must now be sanctioned by the Chilean president Michelle Bachelet.

"Civil unions are an essential institution for unmarried couples living together. This is a legal statute that does not discriminate and will apply to all types of couples, and most importantly, that recognizes different types of families, giving them protection ", declares Alvaro Elizalde, government spokesperson.

Roland Jimenez, from the LGBT group Movilh, says that there is a change in Chilean society and that – despite being strongly influenced by the Catholic Church, it is against discrimination and prejudice.
