The pornography industry is a voracious creator of the most varied and strange fetishes, whether cis, homo, bi or trans. One of the most common fetishes in gay male porn is known as straight guy porn or gay for pay: straight actors who have sex with other men for a little extra money.

And there are not a few who have already ventured down this difficult path: Clay Maverick, Mike Branson, Wolf Hudson, Peter North, Christian Wians, Leo Giamani, Brent Diggs, Rod Daily, Paddy O'Brian, Chris Rockway, Sebastian Kross, Jeremy Walker, Castro Supreme and so on.

For many of these actors, such as Christian Wians, this has become a taboo topic since it definitively migrated to straight porn: “I don’t want to talk about it anymore, I did eleven gay scenes 13 years ago and that’s that.”

Despite not being new, straight guy porn still generates a lot of debate and was the subject of the series True life: I'm a gay-for-pay porn star, produced by American MTV at the end of 2015. The team followed closely the steps of two young actors on the rise: Luke (or Vadim Black) and Ben.

In the first statements, Ben confesses: “I never thought I would do something like this”. However, he agreed because of the money, which would help a lot in supporting his children, and because his wife Kristal is absolutely understanding and encourages him to continue. Luke, on the other hand, did everything he could to hide this facet from his partner Katelin, but without success. “When she found out she cried a lot and was really angry that I had lied. But then we talked a lot and she was able to understand my reasons.”

The person who went deep into the gay for pay universe was Canadian director Daniel Laurin in his documentary Straight guys, winner of the Durban Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. The spark to produce the film came at a time when Daniel was obsessed with watching some of these productions. “I began to wonder why scenes with straight men in gay films were more appealing to me than scenes between two actors who identified as gay,” he recalls.

Daniel then contacted some agencies and delved into the film sets and the lives of the actors. Right away, it became quite evident to him that a very powerful stigma falls on these professionals the moment they agree to work with other men.

Even within the porn industry they suffer from the label of “closeted gays” and are sometimes overlooked because of this. “Many people fail to realize what it really is: just a job. Most of these actors accept the invitation for the money, as the fee is much higher. What's more, these guys travel for a weekend, stay in a hotel, work an afternoon and make a few thousand dollars. They don’t love their work, but they don’t hate it either,” explains Daniel.
