Pernambuco police stations start recording cases of homophobia in police reports

An ordinance published in the Official Gazette determined that police reports registered in Pernambuco should now identify cases of violence and discrimination against homosexuals, transvestites and transsexuals.

According to Paulo Moraes, executive secretary for Social Development and Human Rights, the action will be monitored by the State Center for Combating Homophobia, at the Casa Caiada police station, in Olinda.

"We're going to monitor it more closely, so to speak, to measure the effectiveness of the ordinance. We're going to start gradually, first on this shift, then it goes to the homicide police station, and so on," Moraes pointed out to G1 in Pernambuco.

The ordinance defines homophobia as “violence committed due to the affective-sexual orientation and/or gender identity of the LGBT population”.

One of the intentions of the new measure is to create a database with official statistics regarding crimes with a homophobic bias, which allows for a more precise mapping of occurrences, facilitating the creation of specific public policies aimed at the issue.
