Delegate wants to ban gay parade in Alfenas

The subject circulated on discussion lists of GLBT interest and was the subject of an article published last Sunday by the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo. Delegate Clóvis de Oliveira Leite, from the city of Alfenas, sent a document to the city hall asking for a ban on the Gay Parade in the city and on Carnalfenas.

"Have [sic] while there is still time, as Carnalfenas combined with gay parades will make Alfenas, in the very near future, become Sodom and Gomorrah, cities destroyed by God, as the Bible says" wrote the delegate on Civil Police letterhead mining.

"A multitude of thieves, vandals and drug traffickers converge in this city, who cause all types of criminal acts to happen [...], vandalism, promiscuity", claimed the delegate in the letter.

The public registered at the two events was 115 thousand people, in four days of events at Carnalfenas and 25 thousand at the Parada. Both data are from the organizations.

The MGA – Gay Movement of Alfenas and the Southern Region of Minas – sent a request to the Civil Police and the State government asking for "urgent action regarding the delegate's prejudiced and discriminatory attitude".

Sander Maciel, founder of the MGA, told Folha that "the main issue is that he acted as a State. It is the State that is saying that Alfenas will become Sodom and Gomorrah."

Jésus Trindade Barreto, Chief of Staff of the Civil Police of Minas Gerais, announced that the General Superintendency of the Civil Police is aware of the homophobic attitude of Chief Clóvis and will take the necessary measures.
