Deputy asks his partner for a hand during debate on gay marriage

Liberal deputy Tim Wilson asked for his partner's hand this Monday (4), shortly after Australia's Lower House agreed to debate the project to legalize same-sex marriage in the country. As the debate began, Wilson, from the same party as Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, said in a broken voice: “There is only one thing left to do. Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?” “Yes,” replied Bolger, his partner of nine years, who was in the public gallery. The Chamber is debating the proposal, which it hopes will be approved before Christmas, after the bill received the green light from the Senate last week. The legislative proposal allows religious wedding officiants to oppose this type of wedding, but prevents it in the case of civil officiants, as requested by several conservative deputies. The parliamentary debate began after more than 61% of Australians expressed their support for the legalization of these unions in a non-binding survey called by Turnbull in fulfillment of an election promise.
