British designer creates HIV self-test from recyclable plastic

British designer Hans Ramzan created an HIV self-test kit, made entirely from recyclable plastic. In addition to helping the population, it is helping the environment.

Called CATCH, the kit allows people to take the test without having to go to a clinic, facilitating these people's access to treatment. Furthermore, it also became a cheap solution to be used in poor countries. “HIV is the main cause of death in more than 90% of developing countries”, says Ramzan for the website Casa.com.

“Two and a half million people are infected with HIV every year. Due to many external factors, which are often beyond an individual's control, people often live with HIV unnoticed until it turns into AIDS – the final stage. This low-cost device allows for easy blood extraction with individuals who want to check if they have HIV,” she pointed out.
