The transgender woman Suzy Oliveira moved Brazil by appearing in a report from Fantastic (TV Globo), presented by Drauzio Varella, on March 1st.

An inmate at Penitentiary I José Parada Neto, in Guarulhos, in Greater São Paulo, Suzy sadly told the doctor and communicator that she hasn't received visitors “for seven, eight years”. Varella reacted by hugging her.

After the great repercussion, SAP (Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration) disclosed the address for people to send letters and gifts to Suzy. According to the G1, until last Friday (6) she had already received 234 pieces of correspondence – coming from various states in Brazil.

The website also says that 16 books, two Bibles, makeup, chocolate, an envelope and pens were sent to the prisoner. According to SAP, religious groups also sent letters to Suzy.

The woman told Varella in an interview that, in addition to the loneliness, “in prison you are forced to prostitute yourself for a toothpaste, a soap, a plate of food”. According to the prison administration, Suzy receives personal hygiene items, as well as 75% of the minimum wage in exchange for the work she does at the center.

The report by Fantastic shows well the power of empathy in difficult times in Brazil – and that Transphobia It's a serious matter.
