DJ Flavio Lima shares details about his career in an exclusive interview

A strong, handsome and attention-grabbing young man was introduced to Rio's gay scene about three years ago. Today, DJ Flávio Lima emerges on the national market, proving his talent through his audience. Now, a resident of the R:evolution party, the 33-year-old Sagittarius gives us an exclusive interview, where we are warmly welcomed into his home. Rio's party marathon begins next weekend. As a new resident of the R:evolution party, you will play at the editions on the 30th and at the pool party on the 1st of January. How are the preparations going for such parties? Very anxious. Preparing many surprises, own remixes and a different sound to open the party. Opening a track is as big a responsibility as playing in the middle of the night, as you will show a little of what will happen and will be welcoming the public. If you're playing a not-so-nice sound, the audience may think the party won't be as good. With three years on the gay scene, you are already considered one of the main DJs on the Rio circuit. How did you start your career and where did you enter the gay scene? I started my career on the radio. When I graduated from a DJ course, firstly. I started playing on press radio. So I gained experience for radio, studio environment. I had access to record companies (Sony, BMG, Som Livre), which at the time was very difficult for professionals to obtain material to play, as there was no access to research and buy mp3s yet. Until about three years ago I started doing my after Wake-Up in my own home. A kind of Chill Out for friends who came from the game. Then I got in touch with producer Alex Halter, who at the time managed the Breeze nightclub. I was invited to play at one of his parties. Soon after, the invitation came to hold the after-party on Sundays at the Breeze house. How did you get the invitation to become a resident at the R:evolution party? It was when and through what? I had already played on track 2 at the R:evolution 2nd anniversary edition and track 2 ended up happening and being the sensation of the party. Because it was an open track, because of the location and the sound I made. This caught the attention of producer Rosane Amaral. Afterwards, I went to play at the PRIDE parties in Búzios. My sound was widely commented on, both when I played before Pacheco at the Connection party and after Ana Paula at the Ele.k.tra Pool party. When I returned from Búzios, the residence information was leaked online. I was pleasantly surprised by the news, later confirmed over the phone with producer Rosane Amaral. How is your relationship with producer Rosane Amaral? Little by little I discovered a friend and a serious and professional person who believes in my work. And what about the general producers in Rio? Some kind of intrigue or neglect with someone? I prefer not to mention names, but it's annoying that there are certain cliques. If you work with a producer “A” you end up not working with a producer “B”. With that, everyone loses. So the DJ ends up being limited to playing at parties in Rio. Flávio Lima as an audience member, who likes to go out at night and always goes to Rio's gay nightlife. What do you think about two big parties being scheduled for the same day? Do you believe the public loses from this? No, I think the public has something to gain in terms of options. You will be able to choose between a traditional party and a party that is innovating and surprising more and more with each edition. After Wake-Up rocked Sunday mornings at the beginning of the year. But it's over. Do you intend to return? It was a project of mine and Kaco (his manager). So I think I managed to show a little of my sound there and now the focus has changed. My project now is my work as a DJ. And of course, conquering space in the scene with my residency at R:evolution. As for coming back with the after. After the end of year festivities, maybe in the summer? Surprises may come! His manager is publicist Kaco Rodrigues, who is also his partner with whom he shares the same roof. To what extent do you think this makes the work easier or more difficult? It makes it easier due to the proximity and, of course, the freedom we have in dealing with professional matters. It gets in the way when I have to spend nights researching, looking for songs and as a result I end up not paying any attention to my boyfriend. But I usually separate time for the DJ and time for my partner. Lately his work was checked out and very well received in Bahia and at the last Fun party, in Brasília. How was the reception in other states with the DJ from Rio and what was that experience like? The reception was incredible! I think that both Salvador and Brasília are lacking new things, lacking a different sound. What they hear there is still a little behind. So everything we take is new, and everyone likes new. Some love it, others not so much, but especially in Brasília the reception in general was very good. Excellent vibe, it worked! Which DJs from the Brazilian scene do you like and influence you? Pacheco in first place. Ana Paula for the professional history that I followed. And Gustavo Jr from Le Boy for the work he has done inside the house. And internationally speaking, which DJs from the global scene catch your attention? DJ Paulo [Portuguese DJ who came to play at the Ele.k.tra party], for the sound. DJ Peter Rauhofer and the duo Rosabel for their energy playing. What do you think of the new generation of DJs? Few are really worth listening to. They think it’s fashionable to be a DJ, that all you have to do is download a playlist from the internet and play at parties for friends who already call themselves “DJs.” I believe that only those who are really serious will move forward. Until then, you were signed as the resident DJ at the Spectacular party. However, at the BASFOND party, which was the last one held by the same producer, you didn't play even with your name on the flyer. Why did this happen and are you still a resident of the Spectacular project? What happened was the following. The party did not produce the expected crowd. When I was on my way to the party, the producer called asking me to come home because they couldn't honor my contract. I accepted the apology, as I think this could happen at any party. I wanted to make this story very clear, because a lot of people thought I didn't play because I became a resident of another party. I'm no longer a resident of Spectacular, but I'm still very friendly with the producers. It was a process that was about to happen and that wasn't even a secret from Thiago (producer of Spectacular). And yes, the Spectacular project lost my residency to Revolution, which was a position and a level in the scene that I was already fighting to conquer and everyone understood that well. As a resident of the R:evolution party, why were you absent from the New Year's edition? Before I became a resident of the party, this New Year's edition already had a closed line up. It's the trio of DJs that she already uses every after-party. But nothing prevents me from participating in the label's future afters.
